Fresh Or Frozen Seafood: Cost Versus Quality
Many people only purchase frozen seafood out of long desolate freezer isles. There are always shrimp and fillets in the freezer section, but don’t be so quick to discount the fresh seafood . As a nation, we are always on the look out for the best deals, but don’t be afraid to pay a little bit more for that fresh piece of Salmon! The cost of fresh seafood versus frozen sometimes leads us to an unappetizing fish in stick form. Someone once told me “If your grandparents wouldn’t recognize it as food, don’t eat it.” Sage advice when thinking of eating anything in “stick” form. Of course lots of great options exist in the frozen foods section. I like to purchase frozen when I can see straight through the packaging to the fish itself. Looking for freezer burn is important as seafood dries out easily losing flavor. Just remember to check packaging for expiration dates. A great deal is only good as the dish it makes. The fresh seafood available in our markets is so varied that sales are quite common. A fresh piece of swordfish marinated and grilled can really make your summer BBQ stand out amidst a sea of burger patties. Remember, when shopping for the best dinner deal in the seafood department , the best deal is not always the best meal!
